Description
The sardine is Concarneau’s iconic fish, with fishing for it likely dating back to the 15th century. This industry has underpinned the town’s economic development
right up to the present day. At the start of the 20th century, 500 small fishing boats were involved in the sardine fishery.
In 1900, 32 of the 160 canneries in France at the time were based in Concarneau. Today, more than 3,700 tonnes of fish still pass through Concarneau’s fish auction every year, and three canneries carry on the tradition.
