Gothic art Church of Notre Dame Izel Vor

A veritable little country cathedral, this church was largely built in the first half of the 16th century and is dedicated to Notre Dame Izel Vor (Low Sea).

Its elegant bell tower is one of the most representative of 16th-century architecture in Cornwall.

Notre Dame Izel Vor has been a listed monument since 1914.

Inside the church

Polychrome statuary adorns the interior of the church of Notre Dame Izel Vor. Other highlights include the 16th-century baptismal font, a representation of the Rosary and the pavilion altarpiece on the high altar. A display case houses the parish’s treasures, including a 16th-century gilt chalice.

The Calvary

Built in the 16th century, the Calvary in the church of Notre Dame Izel Vor has a square enclosure that was originally used as a pulpit on busy days.

At each corner are 4 Gothic bell towers, with Mary on the left and the Apostle John on the right. The central shaft bears the crucified Christ and the 2 thieves.
