Description
Bastien Duval photographs the countryside where he lives, in Audierne Bay in Finistère. He captures rural and coastal life in a region caught between the challenges of coastal living and those of rural life. In these landscapes, housing estates, farms and holiday homes blend into one another, and it takes just a few hundred metres to move from the village to the fields and then on to the ocean. To mark the Bicentenary of Photography, Bastien Duval undertook an artist-in-residence programme in the commune of Pont-Croix. Captivated by the beauty of this place, he became fascinated by the Goyen Valley, which changes with the rhythm of the tides. He was drawn to the idea of the ‘edge’ – the meeting point between fresh water and the ocean, the river and the fields, nature and human habitation, the past and the present. He explored this theme throughout his few weeks-long residency.
The exhibition is accompanied by a participatory creative project involving Year 8 pupils from Pont-Croix Secondary School, carried out in collaboration with photographer Coline Jourdan (Atelier Maezad).
