Description
Lecture: “The Arctic: A New Eldorado”, presented by Erwan Le Goff.
Erwan Le Goff is a qualified geography teacher and is currently a PhD student in geography at the University of Rennes 2 (Espaces et sociétés laboratory). He is writing a thesis on planning issues in ‘Healthy Cities’.
The lecture will focus primarily on the following topics:
• Global warming: temperatures rising three times faster than elsewhere, leading to the retreat of sea ice.
• Sea routes: the potential opening of northern passages reducing transport distances between Asia and Europe.
• Natural resources: the scramble for subsoil deposits rich in hydrocarbons (oil, gas) and minerals (rare earths, gold, diamonds).
