Description
Madame de Sévigné and the Bretons
Madame de Sévigné, the famous letter writer, had special ties with Brittany. Her husband was Breton, as was her son, and she herself made frequent visits to her property at Les Rochers near Vitré (where she wrote many of the letters for which she became famous). In 1675, she was an indignant witness to the Papier Timbré and Bonnets Rouges revolts, against which her friend, the Duc de Chaulnes, Governor of Brittany, led the repression. What exactly was the nature of Madame de Sévigné's relationship with the Bretons?
