The cove of Penfoulic

Penfoulic A haven of peace

Sheltered between the Vieux-Port in La Forêt-Fouesnant and Cap Coz in Fouesnant, lies the cove of Penfoulic.

The fauna

Thanks to the abundance of food and the mild Breton climate, birds, particularly migratory birds, seek refuge here.

But not all the activity takes place on the surface. There are no fewer than 15 hectares of shellfish beds in the water of this inlet. Cockles, mussels, clams, oysters and other molluscs grow there peacefully to the rhythm of the tides.

The GR 34 or customs path

Starting from the Vieux Port, walkers can follow the GR34 along the cove to the Cap-Coz headland in Fouesnant in 30 minutes.

Shellfish beds

15 hectares of parkland

In the heart of the Penfoulic cove, 15 hectares of shellfish beds stretch across the bay. Cockles, clams and oysters grow here to the rhythm of the tides, in water that is naturally rich in phytoplankton, the micro-vegetation essential to their development.

Shellfish producers

Shellfish production is an agricultural activity that requires patience, know-how and respect for nature. Producers carefully monitor the growth of the shellfish, maintain the beds and look after the environment to guarantee quality products. Each shellfish harvest is the fruit of meticulous work, punctuated by the seasons and the tides, and a close relationship with the sea.

Discover the alliance between nature and craftsmanship, and the essential role played by the men and women who bring this unique maritime heritage to life.

Les Viviers Buy and taste seafood

Les Viviers de Penfoulic’s shellfish and crustaceans, which are accessible by the shore, have an established reputation. A few tables offer the chance to enjoy seafood with your feet in the sand.

The Anse de Penfoulic is a magnificent place to observe many birds in their natural habitat. Whether you’re an experienced ornithologist or just a nature lover, this area offers you the chance to discover Brittany’s rich bird life, while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Maritime birds

One of the most emblematic species is the black-headed gull, recognisable by its white plumage and brown head in summer. These birds often gather on beaches and rocks to rest or feed.

On the shore, the common shag is a species that can be seen running along the sand, looking for insects and small crustaceans. Its liveliness and curiosity make it a fascinating subject to observe.

The Sanderling, with its light plumage, is another resident not to be missed. It wanders along the shores in search of food, adopting a dynamic and energetic behaviour.

The heron, with its imposing wingspan, is often seen patiently fishing, while the mallard stands out for its bright colours.

Migratory birds

During the migration seasons, the cove becomes an essential stopover for species such as the brant, which take advantage of the food resources available from October to March before resuming their long journey to the far north.
