The Old Port its old stones

A rich maritime past

Formerly known as the port of “Stang Al Lestreg”, the old port was at the heart of commercial exchanges. Its strategic location and the volume of commercial traffic allowed the construction of quays and two slipways from 1850 onwards.

Every year, around a hundred ships picked up and unloaded a variety of goods (sand, maerl, wood, grain, etc.).

In the early 20th century, many farmers from La Forêt-Fouesnant took part in this activity during the winter months, supplementing their income.

At that time, the port was also home to sardine and mackerel fishermen.

The eye of Chanteau

Since 2019, a mysterious and benevolent eye has been watching over the entrance to the Port-La-Forêt channel.
The mosaic Eye, designed and created by the artist Pierre Chanteau, has been installed on the quayside of the Vieux Port.

Positioned like a symbolic guardian facing the ocean, the Eye captures the attention of walkers and attracts the curious. Each fragment of mosaic reflects the light, offering a changing glow as the hours and tides go by.

The work is part of the artistic approach of Pierre Chanteau, who has dotted various places in Brittany with his “eyes”, veritable invitations to observe and contemplate.

To extend the discovery, the artist’s book, which lists all his creations, is available from the La Forêt-Fouesnant Tourist Office.
