Born of the ruins of the silence imposed by Puritanism, English stage music regained its singular brilliance with the Restoration. Between spoken theatre, arias, dances and enchantments, it invented a profoundly original language, combining English tradition with influences from the continent. From Matthew Locke, James Hart and Giovanni Battista Draghi to Henry Purcell and then John Eccles, a whole world of theatre, poetry and affect emerged, in which the voice became in turn confidence, seduction, complaint or apparition. With Handel, finally, London opened up fully to sung opera, without abandoning the expressive intensity that makes the English stage so unique. In the intimacy of the voice/harpsichord duet, this journey reveals all the finesse, freedom and evocative power of a repertoire that is refined, dramatic and profoundly alive. Venue: PLOZEVET church
